Visa Policies for Central Asian Countries

Central Asia, comprising Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, has diverse visa policies that have become increasingly traveler-friendly in recent years, except for Turkmenistan, which remains restrictive. Below is a concise overview of the visa requirements for each country based on the latest available information.

Kazakhstan

Visa-Free Access: Citizens of 83 countries, including the EU, UK, USA, Australia, Canada, and others, can enter visa-free for 14–90 days, depending on nationality. Visitors receive an immigration card upon arrival, which must be carried until departure.

Visa Requirements: Nationalities not eligible for visa-free entry (except Oman and Saudi Arabia passport holders applying at an embassy) require a Letter of Invitation (LOI) from a tour operator to obtain a visa through an embassy.

Note: Kazakhstan’s policies were liberalized to facilitate tourism, particularly following EXPO 2017 in Astana.

Kyrgyzstan

Visa-Free Access: Citizens of 61 countries, including the EU, UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, and South Korea, can enter visa-free for 30–90 days.

E-Visa and Visa on Arrival: Nationalities not eligible for visa-free entry can apply for an e-visa online or, in some cases (e.g., Albania, Argentina, Brazil), obtain a visa on arrival for up to 30 days. The e-visa process is straightforward and accessible via the official website.

Note: Kyrgyzstan is one of the most accessible Central Asian countries, with simplified procedures for most travelers.

Tajikistan

Visa-Free Access: Citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, and Ukraine enjoy visa-free access for up to 90 days. EU countries, USA, Australia, Canada, and others are visa-free for up to 30 days, while Hong Kong citizens are visa-free for 14 days.

E-Visa: Citizens of 117 other countries can apply for an e-visa via www.evisa.tj for stays up to 60 days (within a 90-day period). The application requires personal information, a scanned passport copy, an invitation letter, flight tickets, and hotel bookings. The fee is $30, payable by credit card. Documents should be uploaded as .jpg files.

GBAO Permit: Travelers to the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (e.g., Pamir Highway) need an additional permit, obtainable via a checkbox on the e-visa application for $20. The e-visa is processed in about 48 hours and must be printed for border crossings.

Turkmenistan

Visa Requirements: All nationalities require a visa, and tourist visas are only granted to those booked on a guided tour. A Letter of Invitation (LOI) from a tour agency is mandatory, requiring personal details (nationality, age, gender, etc.). The LOI process takes 14–21 days.

Visa on Arrival: With an approved LOI, travelers can obtain a visa on arrival at Ashgabat Airport or international land borders for $60–100 (depending on nationality and duration) plus additional fees of about $50, payable in cash. The LOI is sent as a PDF, which must be printed and presented.

Note: Turkmenistan’s strict policies and high rejection rates for LOIs (though lower since April 2024) make it the most challenging Central Asian country to visit.

Uzbekistan

Visa-Free Access: Citizens of 65 countries, including the EU, UK, Australia, Canada, Japan, and South Korea, can enter visa-free for up to 30 days. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, and Ukraine are visa-free for up to 90 days.

E-Visa: Citizens of 77 other countries can apply for a single-entry e-visa for up to 30 days via www.e-visa.gov.uz for $20. The application must be submitted at least three days before travel, is valid for 90 days, and requires a printed copy for entry.

Transit Visa: As of July 2018, citizens of 102 countries can transit visa-free for up to 5 days through Uzbekistan’s international airports.
